When I first founded Girls in Tech in 2007, my vision was simple: to create a space where women could thrive in the technology sector, a place that felt welcoming, empowering, and inclusive. What started as a small initiative has grown into a global movement, with chapters in over 50 countries and thousands of members. The journey has been transformative, not just for those we've impacted but for me personally. Along the way, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about what it takes to build and sustain inclusive tech communities. Here are some of those key insights.
Start with Purpose and Passion
At the heart of any successful community is a clear purpose. For Girls in Tech, the mission was to close the gender gap in technology by providing women with the resources, support, and network they needed to succeed. This purpose guided every decision, from the events we hosted to the partnerships we formed. Passion fueled our growth, and it was contagious. When people see your genuine commitment, they’re more likely to join your cause and contribute to its success.
Create a Safe and Welcoming Space
Inclusion isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a fundamental principle that needs to be woven into the fabric of your community. This means actively working to create spaces where everyone feels safe, respected, and valued. For Girls in Tech, this meant being mindful of diverse perspectives, encouraging open dialogue, and standing firm against any form of discrimination or exclusion. It’s about setting the tone from the top and ensuring that every member feels like they belong.
Build a Strong, Diverse Network
One of the most powerful aspects of Girls in Tech has been the network we’ve cultivated. A diverse network doesn’t just happen; it requires intentionality. We sought out partners, mentors, and speakers from various backgrounds, industries, and experiences. This diversity enriched our programs and ensured that our community members were exposed to a wide range of role models and opportunities. Building a strong network also means being willing to listen, learn, and adapt as the needs of your community evolve.

Knowledge is power, and one of the core pillars of Girls in Tech has been providing our members with the education and resources they need to succeed. From coding bootcamps to leadership workshops, we focused on equipping women with the skills and confidence to navigate the tech industry. Empowerment comes from giving people the tools to achieve their goals and the support to help them along the way.

No one succeeds in isolation, and one of the most beautiful aspects of Girls in Tech has been the sense of community and collaboration that has emerged. We encouraged our members to support one another, whether through mentorship, sharing opportunities, or simply being a sounding board. This culture of collaboration extended beyond our immediate community to include partnerships with companies, organizations, and other like-minded groups. Together, we were stronger, and our impact was greater.

Over the years, Girls in Tech has evolved in response to the shifting landscape of technology, the needs of our members, and the broader societal context. Lastly, it’s important to measure the impact of your efforts and celebrate successes along the way. At Girls in Tech, we tracked our growth, the success stories of our members, and the broader impact we were making on the industry. Celebrating these achievements not only motivates your community but also helps attract new members and supporters. It’s a reminder of why you started in the first place and a testament to the difference you’re making.

As I reflect on the journey of founding and leading Girls in Tech, I’m filled with pride and optimism. We’ve come a long way, but the work is far from over. Building inclusive tech communities is an ongoing process that requires dedication, passion, and a commitment to continuous learning and growth. My hope is that these lessons will inspire others to take up the mantle, to create spaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, and to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the tech industry.
